J.K. Rowling Has a Pre-Hogwarts Harry Potter Play in the Works

Harry Potter fanatics: We hope you didn’t throw out those wands just yet, because it ain’t over! Believe it or not, J.K. Rowling still has a little more to tell about our favorite boy wizard. And this time, instead of releasing another book, she’s taking it to the stage.

Just this week, J.K. (can we call you Jo?) announced that she will be reviving Harry for the theater, focusing on the “previously untold story of Harry’s early years as an orphan and outcast.” Does this mean we’re going to be spending more time with those awful Dursleys?

The author is stepping away from the pen for the production, opting to act as co-producer alongside British theater vets Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender. They have yet to hire a writer, but Jo has already decided that she will not be solely responsible for the script — though she will collaborate on ideas. Hopefully, this now-unknown writer will be able to bring across our bespectacled pal as well as his creator did!

Who knew — while all of us were re-reading our beat-up copies of books 1-7, mourning the end of the life-changing saga, J.K. was thinking about bringing back Harry all along! It just took one great production team to push her over the edge.

“Over the years I have received countless approaches about turning Harry Potter into a theatrical production, but Sonia and Colin’s vision was the only one that really made sense to me, and which had the sensitivity, intensity and intimacy I thought appropriate for bringing Harry’s story to the stage,” Rowling explained.

We don’t care how long it took you to get there, we’re just glad it’s happening. See you on opening night!

Are you as excited as we are about Harry Potter hitting the stage? Sound off below.
